Commercial Spaces

Written by Grisel

After working for optometrist offices for over 7+ years, my eyes have seen a lot of frames as well as a lot of not-so-functional office spaces. I worked with Dr. Carrie Lee, O.D.  at Eyedentity Vision Optometry, for a few months, and experienced, firsthand, the importance of “the end user”. Not only does Dr. Lee focus on making sure that her patients are educated about their eyes and health, but she also wants the experience in the office to be as pleasant as can be for them and the employees. Dr. Lee and her husband, Tony, did most of the design work themselves and I think they did an impeccable job. With little or no design background, Dr. Lee and Tony kept the environment in mind and utilized local shops for their furniture, doors, windows, lighting and flooring.  They used many well-known resources from 3Form, IKEA, and Crate & Barrel, to Ocean Sash & Door and Bay Lighting. All of their shopping efforts helped create their contemporary yet sustainable office space.

I’ve pulled over for the night to sleep in Buffalo, NY and am quite impressed with the effort shown in the design of my hotel. I’m staying at the Millenium Airport Hotel here in Buffalo because, frankly, it’s the cheapest option I have for the night. And I have to say that in my incredibly exhausted state, I’m still appreciative of the effort shown in the design of this hotel and it’s main lobby because it’s quite obvious that these rough economic times have hit the area hard and they are trying to make the most of what they’ve got to work with.

One thing you’ll learn about me, is that I love anything to do with Japanese culture.  I have my usual Japanese blogs (visit: http://8tokyo.com/) to go through everyday and one blog entry stood out: Crake.  Crake?  What is that?  On their store front signage it describes: “Crake = Crepe Style Pancake”.  Whoa.  Okay, what does this have to do with design?
